Butler football coach Jeff Voris will begin the sorting out process for next fall during a series of spring drills that will culminate with the Blue-White Spring Game on Saturday, April 19. The Bulldogs will hold 14 practice sessions in the Butler Bowl during a three-week period, which began on March 27. Voris has 32 letterwinners on hand from last fall's 4-7 squad, including Offensive MVP Scott Gray. Playing his first season with the Bulldogs last year, Gray led the Pioneer Football League in scoring with 15 touchdowns, and he topped the Bulldogs in rushing with 547 yards in nine games. Also back are junior linebacker Derek Guggenberger, who led the Bulldogs in tackles with 68, and senior linebacker Mike Bennett, who finished second on the team with 57 tackles. The Bulldogs will need to replace last year's leading passer, T. J. Brown, and last year's top receiver, Nate Miller. Brown completed his final season with 1,312 passing yards, while Miller finished out with 45 receptions for 482 yards. The most experienced of Butler's returning quarterbacks is sophomore Matt Kobli, who saw action in eight games and passed for 465 yards last year, while junior wide receiver Dan Bohrer returns after catching 36 passes for 389 yards last season. Voris has all five starters returning on the offensive line, plus both players who started at tight end last season. The Bulldogs also boast five returning starters on defense, and senior placekicker Jordan Quiroz, who finished second on the team in scoring in 2007 with 53 points. Butler will conduct three to four practices a week in the three weeks leading up to the April 19 Blue-White Spring Game. The spring game in the Butler Bowl is slated for 10 a.m.
